Owls are fascinating birds. The acuteness of their sense of sight and hearing alone would
be enough to make all other birds jealous. These remarkable creatures add soundless
flight to their arsenal making them legendary among birds of prey. Place razor sharp beaks
and talons on the same bird and you have an unmatched lethal combination. They are
essentially birds of the night and far less often seen than other birds, making them
creatures of mystery and myth. These birds with many defences have a flight before fight
defence approach that increases their chance of survival. Some species behave quite tame
when approached and others depart the forest at the first sound of a broken twig. The
only time they will attack is defending their young. I’m told an attack from a Great
Horned Owl is a fearsome thing to
witness and even worse to experience.
One of the most fascinating aspects of owls is their diversity. Some are slow silent flyers,
while others are missiles stooping from nearby treetops. Some hunt forests while others
prefer open meadows and farmland. The weight and size difference is astonishing among
Algonquin's owls. The Snowy Owl is Algonquin’s heaviest occasional visitor weighing in
at a hefty average weight of 58 ounces, compared to the lightest, the Saw-whet Owl
which averages a mere 3.7 ounces.
When searching for owls, one must consider preferred habitat, roosting, food, feeding
habits, courtship and voice or calls.
