     Loons
While hiking along the shore of an Algonquin lake, you often hear the
lonely cry of a Common Loon. You shiver and your skin tingles
involuntarily as you stop and listen in awe to the voice of the North.

These truly are Algonquin’s ambassadors, greeting all visitors with an
eerie repertoire of sounds. These magic songs are referred to as wails,
tremolos, yodels and hoots and describe the true sound of wild
  Algonquin.

Loons are capable of diving to depths of over 100 feet. They can stay
underwater for up to 15 minutes and fly at a cruising speed exceeding 60
miles an hour. Common Loons are 25 to 35 inches in length and weigh
  between 5 and 15 pounds.

Seldom at rest, rarely on land and seemingly always diving, these are
difficult birds to photograph. To capture an image of this elusive bird that
is much more often heard than seen, one must be patient and quiet. A
canoe or kayak is ideal for a silent approach, but don’t be surprised
when the loon dives without warning only to resurface 50 yards or more
  away!
